Stuck on the M3 the other day, on the way back from a client
meeting. Bored of the usual music so decided to educate myself with
Radio 5. Great timing as they were discussing a subject very close
to my heart - Maths & numeracy and it's death as a skill set in
the UK.
Now direct marketing relies on numbers. ROI, CPA, PPC, cost per
thousand and many more TLAs (three letter acronyms my learned
friends - cost per thousand excluded) so a general decline in the
level of mathmatical ability in the UK workforce has direct
consequences for our clients now and more importantly in the
future. Their has been some notice paid to this in the industry
press (most notably David Reed in Data Strategy) but it seems to be
an issue that no one really wants to confront. Obviously there are
major macro economic factors to take into account but I believe
that the DM industry has a very powerful voice and some very
powerful members with the ear of govt and I wonder what their views
on this are? Back
